Managed Solution Turns 20 in 2022- Cheers to 20 years!

managed solution celebrates 20 years banner

Managed Solution is proud to celebrate 20 years in business!

In 2002 our Founder and CEO, Sean Ferrel, launched a business out of his college dorm. His mission? To create a better way to support companies through the power of technology. What began as a dorm-room dream grew to a fully functioning organization.

Fueled by an exceptional team of talented individuals -- our success intersects at passion for people and expertise of technology.

Our Why

Our reason for coming to work everyday doubles as our secret to success: people. Both internally and externally, we explore technology solutions through a people-first perspective. We believe that the care we take of our team sets the standard for the care that we take of our clients and partners.

20 Days to celebrate 20 years!

So how are we celebrating this massive milestone? Every day for 20 days we are digitizing fun group activities through Microsoft Teams. Kicked off with pictures of the team members from 20 years ago!

On Day 6, we reflected on the core values that make us who we are by looking at the code of conduct that got us where we are today.

Most importantly, we took a moment of gratitude for our team and accomplishments in our quarterly meeting, where many of our amazing staff members were highlighted for their incredible contributions.

In Our 20th Year We…

Awards

This year alone, Managed Solution has been awarded 14 times. Our top-tier leadership team has been recognized for their dedication and direction in a string of honors. Starting with our very own CEO, Sean Ferrel, making San Diego Business Journal’s Most Influential People in San Diego, 40 under 40, and being a finalist for SDBJ’s CEO of the Year.

Furthermore, we had multiple C-suite staff placements on SDBJ’s Top 50 Influential Women in Tech’s list by our VP of Sales and Marketing - Tina Rountree, and VP of Strategy and Programs - Alecia Wilson, as well as our amazing COO - Jenell Mott!

As a company, we were also over-the-moon to learn that we were placed on SDBJ’s Best Places to Work list 2022!

Our powerful solutions and services have also been recognized this year in Expertise.com’s Best Managed IT Service Providers in San Diego, Techreviewer’s Top IT services Companies in 2022, Cloudtango’s Top Managed Service Providers US Select 2022 and many more!

Community

At Managed Solution, another huge focus for us is giving back to our San Diego Tech community.

Some ways we were able to do that include donating Microsoft Technology to San Diego’s Just in Time Foster care Sponsoring and participating in this year’s Cause Conference, to empower ourselves and fellow organizations to make a positive social impact within our community.  We proudly helped sponsor Farm to Table’s charity event, benefiting Hospice of the North coast.

With Center for Community Solution’s Tea and Tonics event, our sponsorship helped raise over $510,000 to aid survivors of domestic abuse and contribute to abuse-prevention initiatives.

As Cyber Security Month Champions, we spread Awareness during October’s Cyber Security Month to help businesses and organizations stay in-the-know about the best practices for safety and security!

Speaking of Cyber Security, we had a blast at SIM’s Cyber Security Padre event where we came together with other IT professionals for two of our favorite things: Cyber Security and sports!

We also enjoyed participating in many of Telarus’s golf events throughout the year, where we were able to connect with an onslaught of amazing individuals in the Tech community!

Internally

We've had a big year here at Managed Solution. From employee shout outs to fun bonding events, to babies and weddings and promotions! We couldn’t be more thrilled with the memories and bonds we’ve made this year.

In February, with our 14 days of love for Employee’s – we shared what we loved about our stellar staff members!

We came together in fun team building trivia events including this totally tubular 80’s themed trivia night.

We also highlighted our Rockstar team members in our ‘Player of the month’ program. Every month, we reward a staff member who has gone above and beyond with 8 additional hours of PTO.  On top of this, we’ll be adding an Employee of the Year category in 2023!

The Years Ahead

Businesses can sometimes lose their purpose in the grind of meeting bottom lines. Here, we understand that by doing right by our people the numbers will always follow.

What has really defined our success and kept us in a state of growth, is the happiness of our team. Our future holds the promise of maintaining that ideal. Along with that – we have a collective excitement and curious approach for the challenges ahead.

We are so grateful to have served you for these 20 years and we look forward to the next 20 years… and heck, the 20 after that! Thank you for your continued support, be sure to join us in the celebration on Instagram and Facebook!  (more…)

Managed Solution Becomes Microsoft AEP

San Diego, CA – August 5, 2019 – Managed Solution today announced it has become a Microsoft Authorized Education Partner (AEP), demonstrating its ability to meet Microsoft academic customers’ evolving needs in today’s dynamic business environment. To earn a Microsoft AEP authorization, partners must complete a test to prove their level of academic licensing and market expertise.

The AEP program is designed to train participating re-sellers on Microsoft’s Academic licensing, authorize them to purchase and resell Microsoft Academic licenses, and demonstrate to potential customers that they are approved and knowledgeable academic partners.

“This Microsoft AEP authorization shows our commitment and specialism in the academic IT marketplace and demonstrates our knowledge of Microsoft and its academic products,” said Sean Ferrel, Founder and CEO of Managed Solution. “We hope to accelerate our academic customers’ successes by serving as technology advisers for their IT requirements.”

“By becoming AEPs, partners show themselves to be committed and trained in providing discounted Microsoft academic products to the education market,” said Anthony Salcito, VP of Education for Microsoft Corp.’s Worldwide Public Sector. “This authorization, along with our other education partner initiatives, gives our partners recognition of their areas of expertise and our academic customers the confidence that they are buying from academic IT specialists.”

The Microsoft AEP Program is designed to authorize and equip organizations that deliver academic products and services through the Microsoft platform with the training, resources and support they need to provide their customers with superior experiences and outcomes.

Multi-Cloud is a Reality

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]San Diego, CA, January 31, 2019. AITP San Diego and Managed Solution hosted an exclusive CIO panel on multi-cloud strategy. Representatives of Western Digital, Stone Brewing, UCSD, Scripps Health and Managed Solution shared their experience with establishing multiple cloud environments and challenges they faced along the way. They agreed that multi-cloud is a reality for businesses, and the only open question is whether your business will be reactive or proactive in the approach.

Steve Phillpott, Chief Information Officer at Western Digital, underlined two main facts regarding the cloud: “You own the security - cloud will give you a lot of additional capabilities, but you own it and need to make sure you are secure. Regarding cost, make sure you’re not wasting money by keeping colder, less frequently accessed data in the Cloud.”

Christian Aboujaoude, Senior Director Enterprise Architecture at Scripps Health, explained how cloud affected them: “We started to change our IT business model by leveraging the cloud as an extension of our infrastructure, helping to structure services in a more cost-effective fashion for our patients. Going to the Cloud was a shift for us. However, it did introduce flexibility and scaling especially when leveraged as a service. We had a lot of partners and vendors we work with which lead us down the road of using the major cloud carriers such as Azure or AWS promoting the use of a multi-Cloud strategy.”

Brian Andrews, Chief Information and Administrative Office at Stone Brewing: “Stone embarked on our cloud journey five years ago, supporting our business expansion and optimization with Software-as-a-Service applications and Infrastructure-as-a-Service. A recent example of the benefit was being able to double the size of our website infrastructure in minutes to support a big spike in traffic after announcing our new Enter Night Pilsner collaboration with Metallica.” Stone Brewing, headquartered in Escondido, California, has grown to become the 8th largest craft brewery in the country among 7,000 breweries. Stone has used cloud to scale nationally and internationally while reducing costs and driving business value.

Sean Ferrel, Chairman and Founder at Managed Solution, explained, that when making IT decisions we need to we need to first talk about what business problem we are trying to solve and not talk so much about the technology tools we like best: “Yes, we all have the painters, framers, plumbers and electricians who implement these tools but if we don’t have a great blueprint for what we want to build the result will be less impactful for the business.” Sean added where he sees technology going next: “We need to think about cost management, movement between data centers, aggregation of cloud providers and optimization of data resulting in business intelligence for our businesses.”

The panel was moderated by the newly elected President of AITP San Diego Donna Hale.

Meet the Tech Exec: Holly Smithson, CEO, Athena

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]To download the full magazine and read the full interviews, click here.

Holly Smithson is Chief Executive Officer of Athena. She is responsible for creating, communicating and implementing the organization's vision, mission, and overall direction and serves at the discretion of the Board of Directors.

Smithson previously served as Vice President, Business Strategy at the California Life Sciences Association, the nation’s largest statewide advocacy organization for the life sciences sector. Prior to that, she served as President and Chief Operating Officer at Cleantech San Diego, one of the first cleantech industry associations launched to establish the region as a global hub. Smithson worked in public policy as a Presidential Appointee in several federal agencies and as a registered lobbyist for industry in Washington, D.C.

Athena is a professional development organization dedicated to empowering women in the STEM workforce. Will you share with us some of the challenges that women working in STEM companies are experiencing?

Athena has been providing leadership development, mentoring and research for women in STEM for 20 years. In 2018, we’re at an exciting intersection in our journey towards gender equity. Some call it the year of the woman, I submit it’s the decade of the woman. We have an enormous responsibility to mobilize and execute around this seismic shift in society on what the new norms are for gender diversity in the workforce. Biased recruiting, interviewing and hiring techniques, pay disparity and inflexible work policies are among the many elements that work against a diverse and inclusive corporate culture.

How does Athena support women in STEM?

For our 20th Anniversary, Athena launched its premier thought leadership piece indexing the percentage of women in STEM in San Diego and nationally. We are driving the national dialogue around gender diversity with a data-driven approach to not only discover the root cause of the gaps but how best to close them. Athena’s 5000 supporter community views Athena as a safe harbor to learn how to navigate the inherent biases, to gain greater awareness of the power of the network and how to invest in their career versus the job.

Do you see any challenges specific to the San Diego region?

As a global STEM hub, we assumed San Diego would be ahead of its competitors. As the data reveals however, women represent 23% of San Diego’s STEM workforce compared to 25%, nationally. Although the gap is nominal, we have higher expectations of this region and Athena is positioned to now empower STEM companies with data and strategic capital.

How will Athena change these statistics?

Athena is honored to form its newest alliance with the United Nations and the UN Global Compact. We will be announcing our formal collaboration on December 6 in San Francisco.  Launched in 2000, the UN Global Compact is the world’s largest multi-stakeholder initiative dedicated to driving business awareness and implementation of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals, also known as Agenda 2030: www.unglobalcompact.org/sdgs. Sustainable Development Goal # 5 is focused on "Gender Diversity" and that’s where Athena steps in. Through this UN partnership, Athena will leverage its 20-year convening power and market access and facilitate implementation efforts on SDG # 5.

What is the state of women working in the tech sector?

We know the biggest creation of wealth is unarguably the tech sector and yet women are leaving the tech workforce at a 50% exit rate. This calls for a dramatic course correction. Women influence 80% of consumer purchasing. Women hold 60 % of the US personal wealth. Women comprise 51% of the world population. When we look at the statistics, we need to get to the root cause of this huge disconnect inside the tech sector and challenge our assumptions and hypothesis. The UN partnership will set that flywheel in motion as Athena helps companies create an inclusive environment that celebrates the business and societal rewards stemming from gender equity.

What is next for Athena?

We want to empower one million women working and leading in STEM workforce by 2030. This audacious goal will require a sophisticated digital communications campaign, so we can effectively reach all those women and women champions ready and willing to contribute to society through STEM.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column heading_color="primary-1"][grve_callout title="Tech Spotlight Interview" button_text="Learn more" button_link="url:http%3A%2F%2Finfo.managedsolution.com%2Fc-level-interview-registration||target:%20_blank|"]IT is a journey, not a destination.
